Gravestone Art: Death’s Head & Wings

DeathHead_Wings This winged skull-and-heart icon, which appears in my book A Meet and Suitable Person, about tavernkeeping in Old Hampton, New Hampshire, is based on the 1717 double headstone of Sarah Swett Hobbs and her son Joseph. The stone was carved by Nathaniel Emmes of Boston and is located in the Pine Grove Cemetery (also known as The Old Burying Ground) in Hampton.
